On February 8 the Ukrainian President made an unannounced visit to the UK. He became the first Ukrainian President to address Parliament and meet the king. His address to Parliament was very well received. Zelensky requested fighter jets. The United Kingdom said it will start to train Ukrainians on NATO jets. However, it will take years before pilots are trained. The UK might donate 20 Typhoon jets which are due to be retired soon. This is only Zelensky's second trip abroad since the war began almost a year ago. The UK is the second biggest donor of military aid to Ukraine. Ukraine is very grateful to the United Kingdom for being the first country to pledge tanks, which then induced several other countries to follow suit. Zelensky visited a base where Ukrainians are being trained on Challenger 2 tanks. Zelensky said Ukraine is running short of supplies but assured Britain that Ukraine would win. He heaped praise on former PM Boris Johnson. He also called for stricter sanctions. On February 8 the UK announced more sanctions. These will hit the IT sector and military manufacturing companies that produce drones and helicopter parts. Zelensky and his British counterpart signed the London Declaration. This confirmed the partnership between the two nations. On February 9 Zelensky was in Paris to meet the French President and German Chancellor. He will later meet EU leaders. It is expected that he will call for more arms and accelerated EU membership.
