Zuma Survives via Defiance- And Only Just

This weekend, the National Executive Committee of the ANC has been hard at work, discussing the fate of its president. It is the second time in the past six months that Zuma has had to face his own party's doubts about his leadership suitability. It is reported that 54 of a total of 104 NEC members spoke against Zuma. This is a massive swing of support away from the Zuma camp. A string of events culminated in the March 30th Cabinet reshuffle, followed by the return of Brian Molefe to Eskom, causing ruptures within the ANC, leading to a growing anger against President Zuma. Clearly, Zuma has lost the support of his current NEC, yet he refuses to step down. In addition to the party support, Zuma has openly lost the support of the ANC Alliance partners, namely SA Communist Party and COSATU, both of whom have appealed to Zuma to step down as they regard him as unfit to be the president. COSATU has gone one step further, writing to the ANC informing it that Zuma is banned from speaking at any COSATU rally henceforth. Legally, given that Zuma refuses to step down voluntarily, the party has to now wait until its elective conference in December 2017 when the new membership of the NEC, and especially the new Top Six including the new president of the party is elected. Only then can the ANC nominate a new president to the Parliament to act as the president of the country. Of course the official ANC statement is due tomorrow, Monday 29th at 14h00 , Johannesburg time.The next chapter in this unfolding saga is for the Parliament to conduct its vote of no confidence in Zuma.
